Even though it cost Sony billions of dollars and put unsuspecting publishers in a financial tailspin, one company exec is calling the PSN hacking episode a “great experience.”
Sony Network Entertainment president Tim Schaaff was playing damage control with Venture Beat and he said all the things you might expect – everything’s back and better than ever, blah blah blah.
“We’re in a place where we’re really looking forward again to what’s next, what’s new, and how we can keep growing the network. It’s a pretty crazy event that we went through but we survived, and we’re back strong, and ready to go,” he said.
Of course it’s easy to say that now. Earlier this year, when publishers were unable to release their games on the Playstation Store, multi-platform retail publishers saw PS3 sales plummet because no one could play them online, and millions of users sat back, bored, while they were told to watch their credit card statements for fraudulent activity.
It will go down in the annals of gaming history as one of the biggest dark holes of this generation. So even though the company may be bouncing back, there still has to be a modicum of severity attached to the subject, right?
Not for Schaaff, who ended up concluding that, “It’s been a great experience.”
If this event truly did shake the way Sony manages and operates around the clock, then it may indeed end up being a blessing in disguise. But to call it a “great experience” may be over-reaching.
