Rumor: Cube could go 3D

Remember the 1997 sci-fi cult classic known as “Cube?” Well, Lionsgate is reportedly “fielding pitches” for a 3D version of the franchise.

According to ShockTillYouDrop, the potential film could either be a direct sequel or some sort of reboot of the original.

Directed by Vincenzo Natali, Cube depicts a group of people who are trapped inside a series of connected cube-shaped rooms.

Each room has a door on all six walls, with some leading to another room with fatal traps, while other could eventually lead to an exit.

As FirstShowing’s Alex Billington notes, the original Cube was a “brilliant  concept” for a low-budget sci-fi thriller.

“But rehashed as a “3D” movie? I [really] don’t know if it’ll work that well,” he opined.

“I know I’ll probably be interested as long as they keep the idea of solving puzzles inside of mazes, I just hope they can keep the Kafkaesque feeling the first one had, no need for explanations or backstory, that’ll just water it down.

“

It should be noted that Cube’s success and popularity prompted a 2002 sequel dubbed “Hypercube” which was directed by Andrzej Sekula of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction fame.
