Microsoft pitches Xbox 360 TV

Xbox 360 owners may eventually be able to tune their console to a dedicated “TV channel” that will air live, original programming focused on Xbox gaming.

Bloomberg reports that Microsoft has been in discussions with media mogul Peter Chernin, the former president of News Corp, about the viability of bringing a TV channel experience to the console.

It would be owned jointly by Microsoft and Chernin and would contain live content as well as reruns of old shows to provide a constant stream of programming. Xbox 360 owners could subscribe to the channel for around $1 or $2 a month, according to Bloomberg.

As the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 continue to expand their downloadable TV and movie content, so too are they expanding original video content. Both consoles offer regular video features that highlight the newest content and features available. And Sony just finished airing an entire reality TV series, The Tester, exclusively through the its digital Playstation Network service.

The idea of a dedicated channel where gamers could tune in to view constantly updated content makes sense. Game consoles are turning into entertainment meccas and even beginning to chip away at the relevance of regular TV programming. For now, though, it’s just a preliminary thought for Microsoft.
