It’s a game that singlehandedly turned an entire series into a joke. It’s become the most mystical title of all time. Duke Nukem Forever is real and will be coming out for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Duke Nukem Forever was first announced in 1996. Back then, it was to be a sequel to the recently-released Duke Nukem 3D. Production problems plagued its development and it never came out.
But instead of outright canceling it, developers persisted that they were still working on it. Tiny little reminders of the game have come up every couple years since then but we’ve never seen an any actual work on the project.
Today, at the PAX convention in Seattle, developer Gearbox and publisher 2K Games announced that the game is in fact still in production and it will be coming out for PS3, PC, and Xbox 360. It’s due out in 2011.
Although the game was announced today, we still didn’t get to see any screenshots or video.
Duke Nukem was on the verge of becoming a serious shooter series before Forever. But after the game became so hilariously long-delayed, it tarnished the entire franchise to a cheap punch line.
It may be on its way back to relevance now, though. There’s one thing for sure – this game has been hyped for a longer period of time than any other in the history of video games. It has a lot to live up to in order to meet expectations.
