While this whole PS3 online failure thing has hit Sony hard, it’s also having an effect on other companies’ bottom lines.
Capcom is one such company. As one of the PS3’s most faithful supports – especially when it comes to offering exclusive online products and services – it is reeling over the fact that users haven’t been able to connect to the console’s online servers for nearly three weeks.
In fact, it may be costing the publisher millions of dollars, through no fault of its own.
The company’s Senior Vice President Christian Svensson wrote in an official blog, “As an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget.”
Because the servers have been down, companies that had planned to launch new downloadable games through the Playstation Store are facing unexpected delays. Additionally, new multi-platform game releases are being affected as gamers who have the choice are more likely to buy the Xbox 360 version, since they can access its online content.
Svenssson also shared in the pain of everyday PS3 users, adding, “As a consumer, I also play games online on PS3, which I can’t do… and likely my personal information is also compromised.”
Sony had planned to restore at least partial service to the Playstation Network this week, but those plans were scrapped after the company realized the attack was deeper than originally thought.
The latest word from Sony is that it has no timeline for when service will be restored. In the meantime, companies like Capcom can do nothing but watch their revenue suffer.
