Activision has denied that the Russian government imposed a ban on sales of CoD: Modern Warfare 2.
Previous reports had suggested that “every copy” of the console version was recalled due to a controversial scene in which the protagonist participates in a deadly Moscow airport terrorist attack.
“Reports that Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been banned in Russia are erroneous. Activision only released a PC version of the game in Russia which went on sale on Tuesday, Nov. 10,” the company clarified in a statement to Edge.
However, Activision admitted to engaging in self-censorship by blocking access to the airport massacre “after seeking the advice of local [Russian] counsel.”
Marc Hachman of PC Magazine noted that the distinction between an all-out ban and self-censorship was a “fine one.”
“If Google Translate is to be believed, the game was never actually banned in Russia, although the distinction may be a fine one,” wrote Hachman. “GotPS3.ru reported that a PC version without the offending level was shipping to stores, with the Russian version of the game delayed for an indefinite period,” added Hachman.
