In case you weren’t aware, there are thousands of movies and TV shows available to rent or buy from the PS3, and now there’s an easier way to search through them.
Sony has quietly launched a new app for its home console that allows users to virtually ‘page through’ the tens of thousands of pieces of video content available for streaming.
It’s a way for Sony to bolster its own proprietary video streaming platform, and to make it more attractive than other options available.
Specifically, services like Netflix for unlimited subscription-based streaming, and Vudu for pay-per-view and download-to-own streaming, are more well known entities.
So it’s tough for the PS3’s own video options to stand out, especially since the PS3 itself offers a Netflix app and a Vudu app.
Clearly Sony is able to monetize those offerings, but it makes more money if someone buys a TV show episode from the Playstation Store.
The new app is called “Video Unlimited – Preview,” suggesting this is only a beta version of what Sony hopes to achieve with the app in the future.
