After the incredible success of Harry Potter, JK Rowling could write practically anything and command huge money for it. But every artist wants to be recognized for new work, and not ride on the laurels of their past, at least not if they can help it.
To have her post-Potter work judged on its own merits, Rowling has written under a pseudonym, and now CNN and Entertainment Weekly tell us the sequel to The Cuckoo’s Calling, The Silkworm, will be out this June. The book will be released in the United Kingdom on June 19, and in the States on June 24.
Now that Harry Potter’s done, Rowling wants to write novels for adults, but there have been other Potter stories in the works as well. At Warner Brothers Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is currently in development. (It’s a Potter prequel that takes place in the wizard’s universe.)
There will also be a Harry Potter musical in the works that Rowling is overseeing as well. Maybe Rowling will ultimately have the best of both worlds with her new novel, and the Potter spin-offs. The Potter saga can keep going, and keep fans satisfied, while she can continue to write books for adults and not be stuck telling the same stories the rest of her career.
