George Lucas Is Still Keeping a Watchful Eye on His Empire

Even though George Lucas sold his empire to Disney last year, you know he’ll still be looking out for the universe he created, and have at least some say over the next three Star Wars films. Considering Star Wars is a sacred property to JJ Abrams, you also know he’ll want to do right by George wherever he can.

Now, as Giant Freakin Robot and Flicks and the City report, Lucas’s son Jett has offered some updates on the next Star Wars film, which will hit theaters in 2015. Jett said that his father is “constantly talking to JJ. Obviously JJ was handpicked. He [Lucas] is there to guide, he’ll help where he can. At the same time, he wants to let it go and become its new generation.”

Jett also mentioned that Lucas was writing another Star Wars film before the Disney deal happened, and maybe he would be preparing it right now if he didn’t end up selling  LucasFilm. As George’s son confirms, it’s hard to let go of something that’s been such a big part of your life for so long.

“I knew that he was very torn on the matter, he was like a kid who had turned 18 and was ready to leave the house. Every parent has wanted to let their children go, but they want to hold on to you.”

Still, in some ways Star Wars belongs to so many other people other than its creator. It will certainly be tough for Lucas to give up his grip, but now that his baby is finally leaving the nest, it will be intriguing to see how it will grow from here.
