We already reported the good news that JJ Abrams will shoot the next Star Wars movie on film. There aren’t a lot of directors who have the clout to get a movie made on 35mm celluloid, and it’s great to see Abrams flexing his muscles in this regard.
Now comes a rumor that the next Star Wars movie may be shot in IMAX. This story came to us from Giant Freakin Robot and Aint-It-Cool-News. The CEO of IMAX, Richard Gelfond, had recently said at a Goldman Sachs convention, “We are talking to JJ Abrams now about the next Star Wars being used with partly IMAX cameras.”
As Robot speculates, if this Star Wars is done in IMAX, it could bring in even more money to what’s sure to be an enormous pile. (IMAX engagements are obviously more expensive than regular shows.) Robot also reminds us that this will be the first Star Wars movie shot on 35mm film since The Phantom Menace. (Abrams said he’ll be using Kodak 35mm film stock 5219.)
Abrams shot a lot of Star Trek Into Darkness with IMAX cameras, and this could be the next step for him utilizing the technology. As we’ve seen with the Christopher Nolan Batmans, shooting in IMAX can look incredible if it’s done right, and if Abrams does it right with Star Wars, the saga could end up looking bigger than ever.
