It’s been a rough summer for movies, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the year is going suck. In fact, there could be some big box office windfalls this Fall with the next Hunger Games movie, the next big Marvel installment, and a potential sleeper hit with the sci-fi film Gravity.
As we just reported here on TGD, Gravity, which stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as two astronauts stuck up in space, has gotten strong reviews coming out of the Venice Film Festival. There’s also the sequel to Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and we’re curious to see if the success of The Avengers will rub off on the film. (It certainly did wonders for Iron Man 3.)
The box office should get plenty of replenishment from the next Hunger Games installment, Catching Fire, which opens in November. In addition, we’re also curious about Spike Lee’s adaptation of Oldboy, which is coming at the end of November.
Although it’s not a genre film, we also have to mention the WikiLeaks movie, The Fifth Estate, which stars Star Trek baddie Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange.
If handled right, it could make a good modern political thriller for the internet age.
Not to mention we’ve been following Ender’s Game, which for TGD’s money should be the genre event of the fall. Yes, we expect author Orson Scott Card to shoot his mouth off at least once before the movie comes out, but it should still do well in spite of this.
