The Terminator to Return to the World of Video Games

Within the next few years, we may actually have a new Terminator film because Larry Ellison’s kids, Megan and David, currently own the rights to the character. They have until 2018 to get another Terminator film made before the rights lapse, and current plans have a new movie in the works for a June 26, 2015 release at Paramount. (If The Terminator does indeed get rebooted, it will make 2015 a very packed genre year with Avengers 2, Star Wars, and Batman Vs Superman.)

In the meantime, according to Variety, the Terminator is making a comeback in the video game realm. This game is being developed by Reef Entertainment, who are a British based company, and who are also working on a new Rambo video game. Reef will be creating games based on the first Terminator movie, as well as Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

In a statement, the company said they “are huge fans of (the) 1984 & 1991 sci-fi action masterpieces. It’s an incredible opportunity and an equally huge responsibility to create a game that does great justice to the motion pictures…We have started on our journey and are drawing on all the diverse materials available to produce a high quality, authentic and exciting Terminator video game.”

The Terminator would be a great character for video games, and frankly, we feel there’s better storytelling potential for the Terminator in the video game world than in the movies. There have definitely been other Terminator games before, but we’d love to see what could be done with the Terminator now that game storylines and technology have taken a quantum leap in recent years.
