There’s quite a few filmmakers and storytellers who are the kings of Comic-Con, and Joss Whedon is certainly one of them. Not only does he have geek credentials for creating Buffy, Firefly, and adapting The Avnegers, but he’s also got the triple threat of Avengers 2 and 3, as well as the S.H.I.E.L.D. series coming up.
Avengers 2 won’t be ready until May 2015, but thankfully S.H.I.E.L.D. is right around the corner, debuting on September 24 on ABC. The powers that be at Marvel are hoping their upcoming slate of superhero flicks will weave their way in and out of the Avengers, but as Whedon told The Wrap, “I have to make sure that I don’t overstep” with S.H.I.E.L.D. “At the same time, it’s such a different mandate in terms of where we are in the Marvel universe.”
Whedon continued that “The Avengers are the epicenter. This is the peripheral. These are the people that don’t get the big hammers or the gamma radiation and deal with things on the human scale.”
In addition to his Avengers duties, Whedon will also be working as a consultant for Marvel for the next several years, which means he’ll be working behind the scenes on their upcoming films. As for being a Comic-Con king, he also told The Wrap, “It’s nice, but now I can’t walk the floor.”
