The current console cycle may be coming to an end, but that hasn’t stopped Crytek from squeezing every last drop of horsepower from the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
“Crysis 3 is absolutely maxing out the consoles,” Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli told Videogamer. “There is absolutely not even 1 percent left.”
According to Yerli, even Crysis 2 was more resource demanding than most of the competition, and for good reason.
“No game will ever look technically better than Crysis 3 on these consoles, flat out. Most games are not even anywhere near Crysis 2 technically,” he said.
“[No], I’m not talking about art style – art is subjective – but the pure fact of what we have been cramming in with Crysis 2 on Xbox and PlayStation, I’ve yet to see a game do that still today.”
Yerli also commented on the next-generation of hardware from both Microsoft and Sony – the PS4 and Xbox 720, noting that he’d like to see a significant increase in system memory.
“You can never have enough memory, [as it] is the single most important thing that is always going to be underbalanced – I’ve never seen a console where the memory was the right balance,” he opined.
“Xbox 360, underbalanced. PlayStation 3, underbalanced. Simply because memory is the most expensive part, hence I wish there would be cheaper ways of doing memory so that memory doesn’t become an issue anymore.”
Yerli did note that if costs were cheaper, Sony and Microsoft would likely triple or quadruple the memory in their respective consoles.
“Just say, ‘Hey we’re going to have 32 gigs of memory’. That would be quite amazing because memory can do so many more techniques and tricks,” he added.
