Sony admits that the Wii U will be a hot seller this holiday season, but it won’t detract from PS3 sales. The company says that it looks at Nintendo as competing for a different market segment, and as a result the Wii U is not necessarily going after the same holiday shoppers as Sony’s console.
“We respect Nintendo as a highly successful competitor. Of course we will watch what they’re doing with interest. It’s a very interesting product they’re bringing to market. I don’t have a clear view on how successful it will be,” said Sony UK chief Fergal Gara in a recent interview with Eurogamer.
He said that ultimately it was up to the consumers, not him, to make the call. However, for this season, the Wii U is only going to appeal mainly to the early adopter crowd.
“We won’t be going after the same niche early adopter market they’ll be going after this Christmas. I think we’re sitting in separate camps at this stage, so it won’t be head to head,” he said.
Sony launched a new “super slim” version of its PS3 last week, which it hopes will catapult console sales for the holiday period.
So Gara said that the company is “nowhere close to giving up on PS3.” It is believed that the PS4 will not be revealed until 2014, well after Microsoft unveils the Xbox 720.
