DayZ is probably one of the most successful PC video game mods ever developed, having racked up over one million downloads since going live earlier this year.
As you may recall, DayZ originally debuted as a mod for Arma II and proved so popular that it is now on the fast-track to becoming a standalone FPS.
Unsurprisingly, DayZ mod dev Dean Hall has been hired on as the project lead for the undead shooter.
“This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said impossible four months ago,” Hall said recently. “Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so.”
In the meantime, Hall has offered up a few tidbits that seem to hint the standalone DayZ video game is likely to hit game consoles, instead of being limited to PCs like the original mod.
Indeed, Hall recently told Joystiq: “You’re not going to put it on the consoles if you’re only going to sell 100,000 units or something like that… DayZ will be driven by its PC development and it will innovative on that. And, once we’re at a point, we’ll take it and do a Mac version, 360 and PS3.”
It’s probably also worth noting that Hall
users wouldn’t be able to mod the standalone DayZ game when it launches. In response to a question on the topic, he said, “Not initially.”
