Asus & Wikipad jump on board Sony Playstation Mobile

Sony has confirmed that its PlayStation Mobile cross-platform gaming service will go live this fall in 9 countries, including Japan, the United States and Canada.

Previously dubbed PlayStation Suite, the new service offers access to games and apps across various devices, including Vita, Xperia smartphones and certified third-party tablets.

According to the Japanese-based company, PlayStation Mobile can best be described as a specialized platform that allows third-party devs and publishers to more easily code new content for approved mobile devices.

In a move that is sure to boost the nascent platform’s standing, Asus and Wikipad both jumped on board Sony’s PlayStation Certified license program today at Gamescom 2012 in Germany.

This means owners of devices such as the Asus Transformer Pad and WikiPad’s 10.1-inch tablet can expect to play authorized PlayStation content by next year.

While PlayStation certified device will have access to an alternative game store with specialized mobile titles, PS One Classics will be conspicuously absent from the new platform.

“In conjunction with the launch of dedicated content for PlayStation Mobile through PlayStation Store, legendary PlayStation games (PS one Classics) for PlayStation Certified devices will no longer be offered,” Sony confirmed in an official statement.

In addition to talking up its Playstation Mobile platform, Sony showcased a number of Vita games at Gamescom, including Tearaway,  Killzone: Mercenary and the long-awaited Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified.
