So much ink has been spilled in recent months about a possible third Ghostbusters movie which may never eben see the light of day.
As Dave Trumbore at Collider notes, shooting of the third Ghostbusters film was supposed to kick off by mid 2012, but Bill Murray has famously refused to be involved and Rick Moranis won’t come out of retirement.
As we all know, it would be quite difficult to film a third Ghostbusters without Bill and Rick, especially Bill, even if the movie focuses on a new group of young ‘busters, with Aykroyd and the original gang passing the ethereal torch.
Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who wrote the comedy Bad Teacher, did some work on the script, and now Aykroyd confirms there’s a “new writing staff” attempting to take a crack at it. In fact, Aykroyd said the new staff is “working on it now. It’s got to be perfect. That’s the whole thing. There’s no point in doing it unless it’s perfect. So that’s what we’re up to now.”
No word yet who the new writers are, or whether the script is getting a touch up or a complete overhaul, but clearly Dan’s not going to let this one die without a fight.
Yes, Bill Murray did allegedly send Dan a message that said people don’t want to see a bunch of old, fat guys chasing ghosts, even though the new one’s going to have a younger team ready to take on the supernatural.
Of course, whether there should be a third Ghostbusters will be up to the fans to decide. There’s still tons of fans who love the original, and have fond memories of ‘Busters when it became the #1 comedy of 1984, myself included.
So yes, if a third one sucks that would just… well, suck. But the second Ghostbusters, which was pretty lackluster, hasn’t put a dent in our memories or enthusiasm for the first one, and it will always be a geek fave. Can a third Ghostbusters do the original justice, and end the series on a good note? We’ll continue to hope so.
