As we recently reported here on TG, Metallica is going to be putting together a 3D movie, which drummer Lars Ulrich hinted may not be exclusively a concert film.
Basically, think of Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains the Same, which had weird fantasy elements going in and out of the concert footage. In any case, plans are getting underway for the film, just as Metallica’s now starting to start the heavy lifting on their next opus with Rick Rubin again producing.
In the music business, it really isn’t all that common to hear an announcement, followed by a long period of silence – because people either lose interest or can’t secure the money.
Yet, it seems like this may not be a passing lark for the band, because as Collider reports, Nimrod Antal, who directed Predators and Vacancy, will be the director on Metallica’s 3D flick.
Collider also tells us the movie may start shooting this August for a projected release of next summer.
In a statement, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said, “I’ve been a fan of Nimrod’s since his first Hungarian film, Kontroll, showed up at Cannes in 2004 and blew everybody away. I’ve watched with excitement his career in Hollywood blossom over the last few years. Within five minutes of meeting him I was addicted to his enthusiasm, his take on the creative process and his ‘thinking outside the box’ personality. Let’s get on with it!!!”
Nimrod is also a big fan of Metallica, and he said in a statement, “Metallica has always been a huge part of my life, and it’s an incredible opportunity when we get to work with our heroes… We are going to harness the powerful and almighty energy of Metallcia’s live shows, inject a narrative into it, and shoot it in 3D to elevate the entire experience.”
And if they do it in THX sound, this could be the first 3D movie that requires earplugs as well.
