There’s a lot going on in the Star Trek universe these days, both past and present, with the long awaited sequel to JJ Abrams Trek reboot getting ready to roll in January.
Of course, there’s also a new special that looks back at the original series and its impact: Trek Nation. The special – which revisits the original series – was made for the Science network in celebration of the show’s 45th anniversary.
The special is hosted by Eugene Roddenberry, the son of Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and he told the L.A. Times that ST continues to be a phenomenon because “It really has to do with the message and the metaphors that were in the series and and the following incarnations. So many fans, from all around the world, all relate to this commonality in believing in a future for the common good. Who wouldn’t want to live in a future life like that?”
As for the Trekkies, Eugene said, “I have complete respect and admiration for the fans. After my father’s passing, they were the ones I turned to. They were inspired by my father, and they spoke of how he inspired them to reach beyond the preconceived limitations of what they could accomplish.”
As for Star Trek 2, which is now set for a May 17, 2013 release date, the latest casting addition is Alice Eve, who starred in the comedy She’s Out of My League, and will also appear in the upcoming Edgar Allan Poe horror flick, The Raven, with John Cusack playing Poe.
As Variety reports, like Benico Del Toro, who’s up to play a villain in the film, neither actor has their deal set in stone, but Eve is expected to be confirmed soon.
Like Del Toro’s character, Eve’s place in the Trek universe is currently unknown, but as Variety notes, “Sources say Eve’s character is new to the Star Trek universe, unlike del Toro, who insiders believe will be playing someone familiar to Trekkies.”
