Batman vs Superman has been in the news for nearly three years and in a few days it will finally be showing in theatres. There has been a lot of hype around this movie in the past year, and to tell the truth, after watching the first trailer I was kind of excited and couldn’t wait for the movie to come out. Now, months later, I want to see the Dawn of Justice because I love watching movies per se, but the magic has gone and taking a look at the reviews it seems my fears have been realized.
“While “Batman v Superman’s” Dark Knight may be more of a pure punisher than some fans would prefer, Snyder’s conception of the character at least feels fully formed. Superman remains something of a work-in-progress.”
“As a pure visual spectacle, however, “Batman v Superman” ably blows the hinges off the multiplex doors,”
I wasn’t too sure if the idea of Batman versus Superman was a good one in the first place. Both of them are heroes and have their own fans for different reasons. Batman has no superpowers but he is cool and cunning and doesn’t (or didn’t) go around shooting up bad guys with lethal weapons. Superman on the other hand is an invincible demigod who is the synonym for morality, who do you root for when these two guys go at each other, who is the bad guy?
Reading the reviews it seems like Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of Lex Luthor didn’t live up to expectations or to Luthor’s reputation of being a shrewd, genius villain.
I get that this mano a supermano story line is a sacred text among comic-book aficionados, but Dawn of Justice doesn’t do the tale any favours. It’s overstuffed, confusing, and seriously crippled by Eisenberg’s over-the-top performance. As the megalomaniac tech mogul hell-bent on bringing our heroes to their knees, the actor is a grating cartoon of manic motormouth tics. He might as well be wearing a buzzing neon sign around his neck that says “Crazy Villain.”
Entertainment Weekly, Chris Nashawaty
“Eisenberg gives a catastrophic performance here, all itchy and spasmodic, and built on mumbled rants about Copernicus and Nietzsche.”
“No major blockbuster in years has been this incoherently structured, this seemingly uninterested in telling a story with clarity and purpose. It grumbles along for what feels like forever, jinking from subplot to subplot, until two shatteringly expensive-looking fights happen back to back, and the whole thing crunches to a halt.”
There are some friendlier reviews, but I haven’t read of anyone jumping up and down with joy saying this is exactly what they expected and wished for.
I don’t want to spoil the story because no matter how cautious you are, when you criticise a scene or character then you are involuntarily giving away a part of the plot, that is why I will leave out the opinions about the other characters in the movie, there is nothing much to say anyway.
All in all the movie is apparently “darker” as many would have wished it to be, with most critics wishing a little more humor and a more coherent storyline.
The movie will be coming to theatres around the world in the following days. It is best that you judge for yourselves if Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice lives up to your expectations. I personally have very low expectations when watching a movie for the first time, that way I am usually pleasantly surprised.
