We reported on TG that Robert Rodriquez is going to direct the big live action version of Jonny Quest, and maybe this would have been welcome news when they guy made good movies, but he hasn’t made a good one in a long time.
In fact, this would have been a perfect follow-up for his Spy Kids series, and perhaps this could be his way of getting back in touch with family audiences. Recently, Rodriguez talked to Collider about Quest, saying he loved the original show. “They were really ahead of their time,” Rodriguez says.
The director is turning in the screenplay for Quest right now, and of course he’s not going to go for an R-rated version, this one will be PG or PG-13.
There’s also hope for Quest because Terry Rossio (Shrek, Pirates of the Carribean) is working on the script. I never thought a theme park ride would be adaptable into a movie, but Terry’s script for Pirates of course proved us wrong.
Again, when Rodriguez first came on the scene, he was a wonderfully inventive filmmaker, and he hasn’t made a movie worth a damn in we can’t remember how long. We’d love to see him come back, and if he can do it with one of the precursors to Spy Kids, we’d love it.
