When you call a movie a director’s “ultimate masterpiece” in the trailer, you’re looking for trouble, especially if the movie doesn’t deliver. But will Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak ultimately deliver?
While trying to get At the Mountains of Madness together, Crimson Peak was announced as Del Toro’s next film, and it’s now due for release on October 16. It’s a period movie, with very stuffy, uptight people facing Del Toro’s trademark CG creatures in a haunted house.
As Vanity Fair tells us, the movie takes place in 19th-century England, and it has a very foreboding winter look, much like Fargo, where snow whiting out the screen gave the movie a very oppressive, creepy feel.
Crimson Peak stars Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam and Jessica Chastain, and we’re always curious to see what Del Toro has next. We’re hoping one day he’ll get his shot to make At the Mountains of Madness, but perhaps Crimson Peak will be the Lovecraftian / Poe / old fashioned ghost story in a similar vein. I liked the left turn John Carpenter made after Halloween, going old-fashioned ghost story with The Fog, and maybe Peak will be a cool left turn for Del Toro too.
