We never thought a Blade Runner sequel with Harrison Ford would ever happen in a million years, but then again, who thought there would be another movie in the Alien universe either? Ridley Scott’s been very high on making another Blade Runner, and he says Ford loves the script as well.
Ford and Scott famously didn’t get along during the Blade Runner shoot, which is why we’re surprised to learn there would be plans for them to work together in a million years, but as Scott told The Hollywood Reporter, Ford “absolutely” wants in on the movie, and that the script is “the best thing [Ford’s] ever read.”
Scott added that the sequel is “very relevant to what happened in the first one,” and that there’s still plans for another Prometheus movie, which he said will focus on the relationship between Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender.
There have been reports that Scott may not direct the second Blade Runner because his next film will be the sci-fi thriller The Martian, but it’s hard to imagine him not being at the helm of the follow up to one of the most celebrated movies in sci-fi history. Blade Runner was Ridley’s vision all the way, and another filmmaker coming on could end up just doing a pale imitation of the original.
Ultimately we’ll see if another Blade Runner will actually come together, or if it could become a footnote in history of great (or not so great) unmade movies. We’re not sure why Scott would want this kind of pressure on himself because Blade Runner is sacred to so many people, but he’s clearly very excited to continue the story, and it could be interesting to see what a trip back to that world could look like today.
