Along with Ghostbusters 3, the sequels to Independence Day could have wound up the most written about movies that never got made, but the third Busters may indeed be going forward very soon, and the ID4 sequels finally got the greenlight at Fox, even though it probably won’t include Will Smith.
Deadline tells us that this week Fox gave Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin the go ahead, and it now has a June 24, 2016 release date. Yet this report also tells us that instead of two sequels, there will only be one sequel, at least so far. (The plan was to shoot two movies back to back.)
We assume that if the return of ID4 makes big bucks, there will be another one, and if all goes according to plan, the next ID4 will be hitting theaters for the 20th anniversary of the original. Amazing to think it’s been that long already that the first one hit the theaters.
We at TG still have a soft spot in our hearts for the original ID4, and we hope the next one can be a good time as well. It will be hard to recapture that exact same spirit, but we’re’ just as curious as anyone to see how the story will continue, and who will be back from the first one for more.
