Last week, TG Daily reported that Jack Dorsey, original Twitter founder, would be making a comeback to the company.
Today we’ve got word of his primary assignment at the company: the daunting task of making Twitter more useful for the average person.
“We have a lot of mainstream awareness, but mainstream relevancy is still a challenge,” he said during a discussion at Columbia University on Tuesday.
Dorsey explained that Twitter could be a tool for navigating technology and an information source, more than a way to relay one’s own thoughts.
According to Dorsey, the best part about Twitter is its real-time aspect.
“[For example], at’s happening in Egypt right now. That’s the value, not the brand ‘Twitter.’
“So we need to refocus on that value… That’s my goal in the next few months.”
Dorsey also noted that new moves would it easier for Twitter devs to move beyond “basic” services.
“It’s up to any good platform company to really guide its developers in the right way, to inspire them to create interesting and useful applications.”
When asked what he wanted to see from Twitter developers, Dorsey admitted he had “no idea,” but suggested additional tools designed to combine data with other services would be a good starting point.
“The interesting products out on the Internet aren’t building significantly new technologies. They’re combining technologies,” he said.
