As if you didn’t already know that Apple dominates the world, this week it ran its “10 billion download contest” to commemorate (cough, cough *brag about) its 10 billionth download from the (iOS) Apple App Store. Yow!
To celebrate the 10 billionth download, Apple gave away a $10,000 iTunes gift card. That’s a whole heck of a lot of apps and music!
Cupertino began its long-awaited countdown to 10 billion downloads on January 14, when there were only about 250 million downloads to go.
“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years – a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone – the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” Apple vice president Philip Schiller said in an announcement.
“The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet,” he continued.
Love it or hate it, 10 billion downloads is an impressive number for the online content provider.
My only question, why wasn’t it a 10 BILLION dollar iTunes gift card?
