Just a matter of days after Google’s long-anticipated digital music service resurfaced in the blogosphere, there are new rumblings that the search giant might be closing in on a deal with Universal.
According to a Bloomberg report, Universal may be ready to sign up with Google as early as tomorrow. The publication cited “a person with knowledge of the situation” as providing the information.
This speculation will come to a head when Google holds a media event in Los Angeles tomorrow. It’s widely expected this will include an announcement of a Google-powered music service.
Most likely, a Good music platform would have social and cloud-based features and could push the rest of the digital music market to increase the channels in which they make their content available.
The two titans in the industry right now are iTunes and the Amazon MP3 Store. Google has actually done a lot to boost Amazon’s presence in this space. Back in the day, the Amazon MP3 app was pre-installed on Android phones. Today, it remains one of the most popular apps for the mobile Google operating system.
Features that Google will reportedly offer include a free song of the day, direct integration with the Android Market, and a recommendations platform that will suggest other artists based on user preference.
It always seemed like a matter of when, not if, Google would jump in to take on iTunes. Based on this most recent information, we’d say it looks like it’ll happen soon.
