The term was coined by a London boutique owner, Susie Faux. Creating a capsule wardrobe has endless benefits. It ensures that less stress is encountered when getting dressed. Many people shop compulsively for unnecessary things that include clothes. A capsule wardrobe eliminates the need for this and more money will be saved. The extra time and money can be used to invest in other areas of your life.
Furthermore, it makes one to be more creative once you realize that you can survive and live happily with less items. It also offers great styles with lots of option to choose from and usually contains around 30-40 items. One thing to note is that having a capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean that you won’t buy quality clothes. In fact, most of your clothes will be affordable and of good quality even if you’re living on a tight budget. Here are some tips to consider when building a capsule wardrobe.
1. Bring out everything from the closet and boxes.
At times, we get emotionally attached to some clothes due to sentimental reasons. It’s time for your entire closet to have an overhaul. Don’t hesitate to take all your clothes and shoes.Lay all items on the bed and assess them.
2. Categorize each piece into four sections
The following labels can be given to each category of cloth and pair of shoes.
- The clothes that are comfortable, fits nicely and boosts your confidence. Without any iota of doubt, these should be your favorite clothes.
- Those that you rarely wear probably because you don’t like them.
- The ones you haven’t worn for several months, some of them may be in bad condition.
- Lastly, seasonal items that are not yet in season. They will come in handy when the right season arrives.
Once you are through with categorizing, it’s time for the next step.
3. Choose the clothes and personalize your style
There is no need to stick rigidly to any rules, just find out what works best for you and stick with it. Every individual has his/her unique personality, taste and lifestyle, so what works for others may not work for you. For starters, choose few items of each type of cloth and shoe for your capsule wardrobe. Opt for versatile clothes and neutral colors as they are very easy to mix and match. The wardrobe will be upgraded depending on the season, although most of the basic item will still feature in each collection.
The remaining clothes can be stored for a while and reviewed later. Once you are convinced that you don’t want to keep them anymore, they may be given out, sent to the donation pile and you can even sell some. As each season runs its course, always remember to plan ahead for the next one.
