According to a new rumor, Apple has canceled its plan to open a new retail storefront in New York’s Grand Central terminal, a plan that itself was only just a rumor.
Earlier this year, speculation began pouring in that Apple was in discussions with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the agency that owns Grand Central.
But apparently making such a move requires a very long and cumbersome approval process. At some point, it must have been too much of a hassle for Apple.
Once a booming rail transportation hub, Grand Central now only operates New York City public transportation to parts of upstate New York and Connecticut. However, it remains a landmark and gets huge foot traffic from tourists and the many employees working in nearby buildings.
Apple’s landmark store on 59th Street in Manhattan is less than one mile away from Grand Central, and receives more than its fair share of traffic. Besides, considering most shops in Grand Central are very cramped, imagining a huge Apple Store there is nearly impossible.
So, unfortunately, the boring shops currently in Grand Central will remain. Those wanting to get an iPad fix will have to walk up 17 blocks.
