Nokia and Yahoo, two powerhouse companies that have been blindsighted by emerging technologies around them, are apparently working on something big.
All Things Digital has reported that Yahoo will be holding a press conference on Monday to announce a new way of “providing global consumers with rich online and mobile experiences, and bringing forward a new era in keeping consumers connected.”
The event will supposedly reveal details of “Project Nike,” a long-awaited joint project from Yahoo and Nokia.
According to media reports, Nokia will announce that future handsets will incorpoate a brand new mobile Yahoo infrastructure.
Yahoo’s strongest inroads lately have been in the mobile space, although it has been absolutely stomped on by Google and Apple. And Nokia has reminded us that they still carry a ton of weight around the world, though the company is teetering on the edge of irrelevance in the US smartphone market.
Yahoo’s CEO Carol Bartz has worked vigorously to re-brand the company as one that is current and not the stale search platform that users have seen in the past few years.
Project Nike, named after the Greek goddess (not the shoe company), could be something as minor as a visual upgrade of its existing mobile search services, or something as huge as its own mobile operating system like Google’s Android.
But will it be too little too late? Yahoo and Nokia will both have difficulty coming back to the forefront after Google, Apple, HTC, and Motorola have done so much to take the spotlight.
