AMD’s spun-off foundry operation, Globalfoundries, has signed up Gregg Bartlett as senior veep for technology, research and development.
Bartlett joins the fab outfit after 25 years in technical and management positions at Freescale Semiconductor and its predecessor, Motorola’s Semiconductor Products. He succeeds Craig Sander, the R&D leader during the launch of Globalfoundries. Sander will now be handling a number of unspecified special projects, reporting directly to company CEO Doug Grose, says the company.
One of Bartlett‘s key tasks will be to oversee collaborative R&D activities with the IBM Alliance for low-power semiconductors.
Globalfoundries was set up last month with funding from the Abu Dhabi government’s funding operation, ATIC.
“The semiconductor industry is poised to greatly increase its reliance on foundries,” says Bartlett.
While we can see that AMD will indeed be keen to make use of its erstwhile fabs, we suspect that Intel and Nvidia will be unlikely to share Bartlett’s enthusiasm.
