Okay, so Neil Blomkamp’s Chappie isn’t getting great reviews, it’s still being considered the leader for this weekend’s box office crown, and we’re still hopeful that Blomkamp will deliver with the new Alien movie.
Blomkamp’s sketches look pretty damn cool, and as Sigourney Weaver told Variety, “I can’t think of a better director. He’s a real fan. I think he’ll be true to the world and take it in unexpected directions. It’s got a lot of sinew in it. It will certainly stand up to the others and probably break a lot of new ground as well.”
Weaver has a role in Chappie, where Blomkamp showed her the sketches he was working on, and “suddenly it seemed so obvious that this would happen. We’ve been in touch the last year, and he’s shared wonderful artwork.”
Weaver also told the Hollywood Reporter, “I would love to take Ripley out of orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to what was such an excellent story. I finally said, ‘You know it’s a pity we didn’t really finish the story, I should probably talk to Jim Cameron about that.’ And [Neil] said, ‘Don’t talk to Jim Cameron about that, talk to me about that.’”
So again, we’re still hopeful that Alien can be resurrected, and not wind up like Alien Resurrection, and that a combination of a classic leading lady with some fresh director blood will hopefully pay off.
