It took him a long time to return, but it was great to see Guillermo Del Toro back in action after being off the big screen for four years. Whether you loved Pacific Rim or thought it was just okay, it was cool to see Del Toro deliver a big, fun sci-fi adventure that rekindled our love for giant robots battling giant monsters.
While many fans would love another Pacific Rim movie, it wasn’t a hit, and it probably didn’t make enough money world-wide to make a sequel worthwhile for a major Hollywood studio. Still, Del Toro’s got a lot irons in the fire, including the upcoming vampire series The Strain, as well as his next feature, Crimson Peak, which just got a release date of October 16, 2015.
Crimson Peak is a ghost story that features Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam and Jim Beaver, and it’s reportedly set in England during the 19th century.
So in what’s shaping up to be a huge year for genre flicks with Avengers 2 and Star Wars, it’s nice to know that Del Toro will be coming back with something new and scary as well. We’re also hoping he’ll one day get the chance to make his dream project, H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, which was going to be made in 3D at Universal before the studio shut it down in favor of much safer material.
