MK802 PCs-on-a-stick get a software update

We recently discussed the uber-mini MK802 PC-on-a-stick designed by Rikomagic. As you may recall, the company upgraded its MK802 III PC a stick with Bluetooth and a number of new features back in November. And now the company is rolling out a software update for both the older MK802 II and the newer MK802 III.

Essentially, the latest software update makes the little PC-on a-stick much easier to control from across the room. So rather than having to fuss with plugging in wired or wireless keyboards, you can control the device using your Android smartphone or tablet which acts as a touchscreen controller.

If you’re unfamiliar with the two versions of the MK802, they both run Android and look like fat flash drives. The primary difference between the two? The processor. The older version II is equipped with a single-core Allwinner A10 Cortex-A8 processor while the III boasts a dual-core Rockchip RK3066 Cortex-A9 chip.

The software update for both devices is available directly from the Rikomagic website. It sounds like upgrading  is fairly simple, requiring the user to load the update.zip file onto a microSD card. Then, all you need do is put the memory card in the machine, turn it on, and follow the prompts on the screen.

Another interesting feature offered by the latest updated? It also allows you to use the PC-on-a-stick as a Wi-Fi hotspot – if it’s connected to a mobile broadband modem. Check out the video above to see the smartphone control action in use.
