Motorola Mobility and Verizon will reportedly introduce a next-gen smartphone on September 5 that features an edge-to-edge screen and works with LTE networks.
According to Bloomberg, the device will run an unspecified version of Android, although we can probably safely assume it will be loaded with either Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) or Jelly Bean, with our fingers crossed for the latter.
“The model also would be one of the first full-screen phones in the US, meaning it uses the entire front of the device as a display,” Scott Moritz and Jon Erlichman of Bloomberg explained.
“The approach maximizes the screen viewing space by eliminating the black frames or bezels around the display.”
As Ron Amadeo of Android Police notes, a bezel-less phone would truly be a “next-generation” phone design, simply because it eliminates everything that isn’t useful screen real-estate.
”You could fit more screen into a smaller device. It’s certainly not a new idea (see: every futuristic movie ever), or an impossible one, but actually building it would instantly put you at the top of the Android heap, and your company would be seen as leading the way into the future of phone design,” Amadeo speculated.
“I’m starting to think this might actually happen. An all-screen device – one step closer to that sci-fi future we see in the movies. I could not be more excited.”
Phandroid’s Chris Chavez expressed similar sentiments.
“This would make it a quite the head turner among Android devices (and iPhones) plagued with large bezels… No word on the display size of said device, but without a single (worthy) Galaxy Note challenger in the world of Android, I’d hope for something close to 5-inches,” he added.
