We recently ran a report about superhero equality, discussing such characters as The Black Panther who was first introduced in The Fantastic Four.
Interestingly enough, it now seems as if The Falcon may be joining the next Captain America movie with Anthony Mackie reportedly up to play the superhero. As you may recall, Mackie also starred in The Hurt Locker, the upcoming Gangster Squad, and Pain and Gain, Michael Bay’s smaller, darker comedy.
The Falcon is really Sam Wilson, who was from Harlem, and he worked with Captain American as a partner way back in the 70’s. The bird suit he wears gives him his powers and allows him to remain on a telepathic wavelength with his avian allies.
All this would actually make a pretty cool superhero movie on its own. Of course, The Falcon could also act as a nice foil for Captain America, and take the franchise in quite a different direction than originally anticipated.
Not to mention, if this could inspire more African American superhero movies, like a Luke Cage film, that would be awesome as well.
Remember, Tarantino was a big fan of Cage because he was practically a Blaxploitation superhero, and I’m willing to bet he could make a good movie out of it if he wanted to take it on. He said at Comic Con he has no idea what his next movie’s going to be. Well… How about Luke Cage?
So if Mackie comes aboard it will be for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is slated to hit theaters on April 4, 2014. The Winter Solider is Captain America’s sidekick, Bucky, who turns evil and becomes an assassin who goes by the name of the Winter Soldier.
The film will be helmed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed a number of television shows such as Arrested Development, Community and Happy Endings.
