A server that uses up to eight AMD Opteron processors each with six cores was announced by Sun Microsystems today.
The Sun Fire X4640, said the company, delivers high performance using industry standard benchmarks and it’s claimed it’s the most compact 24 to 48 core system available from tier one vendors.
Sun Microsystems claimed that the server delivers up to 65 percent more performance than its previous Sun Fire X4600M2 server.
It supports up to half a terabyte of memory. It supports Solaris, Windows and Linux operating systems as well as VMWare, Solaris Containers and Microsoft Hyper-V.
Sun claims that the machine beats the HP Proliant DL785 G5 system by 21 percent, has 33 percent better performance than a 16 processor NEC Express 5800 server, and 2.7 times the performance of a four processor IBM System 550 server.
The benchmarks are available in detail here.
