Sony has unceremoniously downed its online games division after positively identifying a second security breach.
“Dear valued SOE customers, we have had to take the SOE service down temporarily,” the Japanese-based company explained in an official statement.
“In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday). We apologize for any inconvenience and greatly appreciate your patience.”
Sony Online Entertainment is home to a number of multi-player games, including EverQuest, DC Universe and The Matrix.
Although Sony confirmed the above-mentioned incident, the corporation has refused to comment on a Nikkei report that claims the personal information of 12,700 customers was likely compromised during the second attack.
The latest debacle comes just days after Kazuo Hirai, Sony’s executive deputy president in charge of consumer products and network services, was forced to apologize for an earlier security breach which exposed a staggering 77 million online customer accounts.
