Twitter in hack SNAFU

Twitter acknowledges unintentionally resetting a significant number of account passwords after an unknown number of users were compromised.

“Twitter believes that your account may have been compromised by a website or service not associated with Twitter. We’ve reset your password to prevent others from accessing your account,” read the email.

“Always check that your browser’s address bar is on a https://twitter.com website before entering your password. Phishing sites often look just like Twitter, so check the URL before entering your login information!”

Although the social networking site issued an official apology for doing so, it has yet to provide additional information, such as how many accounts were actually compromised and who was responsible for the digital data breach.

Meanwhile, NPR noted  that “several China-based foreign journalists and analysts are reporting an attempted hacking of their Twitter accounts, as China’s Communist Party begins a sensitive meeting that will set in motion a once-a-decade leadership transition.”

Of course, it remains unclear if there is any connection between the China hacks and the wider issue Twitter warned its user about earlier this morning.

Nevertheless, better to be safe than sorry, so it might be a good idea to reset your password even if you didn’t actually receive a warning email from Twitter.
