When it comes to social media Google moves fast.
According to AFP, Google chief Larry Page said Thursday that the recently launched Google+ social network has already collected more than 10 million members.
“Over 10 million people have joined Google-Plus,” Page said during a quarterly earnings conference call. “That is a great achievement for the team.”
He also said that about a billion items are shared on a daily basis at Google+.
Google revealed its competitor to Facebook on June 28. Membership is currently invitation-only because the service is still in a testing phase.
“Online sharing is awkward. Even broken. And we aim to fix it,” Google’s senior vice president for engineering Vic Gundotra said in a blog post.
When unveiling Google+, Gundotra emphasized the ability it gives users to separate online friends and family into diverse “Circles,” or networks, and to share information only with members of a particular group. Apparently people from work don’t need to know about the bong hits and tequila shots you did last night.
“We’d like to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software,” he said.
One of the biggest complaints people have about Facebook is that updates are shared with everyone on a friends list. A user has to go through a pretty complicated proves to create separate groups on Facebook.
“Not all relationships are created equal,” Gundotra said. “So in life we share one thing with college buddies, another with parents, and almost nothing with our boss.
Mark Zuckerberg is the most popular person currently on Google+, but he doesn’t appear to be shaking in his boots yet. He did hide his friends list on Google+. Maybe he doesn’t want people to see how fast Google+ is adding members?
