Someone decided to compare the thickness of the white and black iPhone 4 devices.
And the result was that the white version is about 0.2 millimeters thicker, because Apple had to redo its entire manufacturing process for the new color.
In an interview with Allthingsd.com regarding the new iPhone, Apple VP Phil Schiller said the process was “not as simple as making something white. There’s a lot more that goes into both the material science of it–how it holds up over time…but also in how it all works with the sensors.”
However, on the official product page on Apple.com, the company lists the thickness of the white iPhone 4 as 9.3mm, the same as the black version.
The delay of the white device became something of a punchline for Apple critics, as not many people could understand why it took more than 300 days to just make something a different color, especially when the iPad 2 was able to launch in black and white from day one.
So, this isn’t something to file a class-action lawsuit over, but hopefully Apple will at least update the product page so as not to misinform customers. After all, when it comes to mobile phone slimness, every millimeter counts.
