Customers with an HTC Thunderbolt phone or 4G modem have been without data service for 24 hours.
Verizon has confirmed its high-speed mobile data network is experiencing an outage, but it knows what the issue is and is working on a fix. It began early yesterday morning, and since then anyone with a Thunderbolt – the company’s only 4G phone currently on the market – has been relegated to a “1X” data connection.
That’s the slowest kind of connection available, equivalent to the technology that was in place in the early 2000s.
“We are aware of an issue with 4G and LTE connections & our network engineers are working to resolve quickly,” Verizon tweeted in its official support account.
The outage is also affecting Verizon’s 4G MiFi devices and USB modems. It originally affected customers in the Atlanta area due to inclement weather, but expanded nationwide.
Verizon later noted, “We expect to see the network restore on a market-by-market basis. Timing and additional details will be provided as they become available.”
Our Thunderbolt remained unable to connect to 4G services as of 6:30 this morning in New York City.
Update: Verizon Wireless apparently restored 4G service to the New York area Thursday morning after an outage downed the network around the U.S. for about a day.
Update 2, 11:46 A.M. ET: Verizon says its high-speed 4G network is up and running.
