Tweet about mold lands tenant in court

Chicago, Illinois – A real estate firm is suing a tenant after she complained about mold in her apartment via Twitter.

Horizon Realty Group says it stumbled across the tweet while defending a class action lawsuit Amanda Bonnen filed against it last month. It is now filing a libel lawsuit against Bonnen.

The tweet read: “Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon Realty thinks it’s okay.”

In a statement, Horizon says the apartment wasn’t moldy – just damp. So that’s all right. Apparently water leaked into several apartments when a contractor made mistakes with roof repairs.

“Ultimately, all tenant grievances were quickly and amicably resolved, except Ms Bonnen’s,” the Horizon statement said.

The Chicago Sun-Times has a rather wonderful quote from Jeff Michael, who runs the firm. He said the company hadn’t spoken to Bonnen, nor asked her to remove her post, and added: “We’re a sue first, ask questions later kind of an organization”.
