Giant Japanese manufacturer Toshiba will release a TV in Japan that uses the Cell multimedia chip.
The Cell Regza 55X1 HDTV allows for eight simultaneous time shift channels and also a has 3TB hard drive to cope with the stream – you can even watch all eight channels at once if you’re a sucker for punishment.
Toshiba includes HDMI and DNLA connectivity and a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio with a 240Hz refresh rate.
The TV will become available in Japan by the end of the year but we’re unlikely to see the machine in the US for another year or so.
The machine is not going to be cheap, when it goes on sale in Japan it will cost over $10,000 – but prices will come down as other models based on similar principles begin to appear.
