Although it hasn’t yet launched its first phone to use its new high-speed network, T-Mobile is introducing a new handset that will make use of it.
T-Mobile is calling it the MyTouch, which is the same name it used for one of its first Android devices a couple years ago.
It will pack in a 1 GHz Snapdraggon processor, 3.8-inch WVGA display, and dual cameras (front-facing and rear-facing). It also includes an 8 GB microSD card.
This will be the second phone to use T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, which offers much faster download speeds than any of its current devices in the US.
“Taking advantage of the 4G speeds on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, the new myTouch delivers a faster and more compelling experience than most competing smartphones on the market,” said the carrier’s VP of product management Andrew Sherrard.
T-Mobile plans to launch its HSPA+ network in the coming months, and hopes to make it the most far-reaching next-gen network in the country. Sprint is the only other major carrier offering 4G capabilities, but it’s only available in fractional areas of the US.
T-Mobile has lost a bit of relevance lately because all of its competitors managed to come out with killer products. AT&T got the iPhone, Verizon got the Droid, and Sprint got the Evo 4G. Meanwhile, T-Mobile hasn’t had a really noteworthy phone since it helped launch the first Android phone in 2008.
It hopes the new MyTouch will change that. No official word has come about how much the phone will cost, or what its data plans will be.
