Chicago (IL) – Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the greenest of them all? Yes, you have read the headline already and Intel can tout that no one else in this country buys more green power than the chip giant. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the nation’s top 50 purchasers are buying more than 11 billion kWh of green power annually, equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) that would be produced from the electricity use of more than 1.1 million average American homes.
The EPA said that Intel leads the ranking with 1.3 billion kWh of wind power, which is purchased from PNM and Sterling Planet. Pepsi is second with 1.1 billion kWh, followed by Kohl’s Department Stores (601 million kWh), Dell (554 million kWh) and Whole Foods Market (527 million). Other IT companies in the ranking include Cisco (#9, 401 million kWh), Sprint Nextel (#38, 88 million kWh), Sony DADC (#40, 83 million kWh), Motorola (#44, 78 million kWh) and AMD (#46, 74 million kWh).
Intel’s green power purchases equal the consumption of electricity of 130,000 average U.S. homes.
Despite the huge amount of green power purchases, the company is only covering 46% of its U.S. power needs through green power, the EPA said. Dell, for example, purchases 158% of green power for its own power needs, Cisco 46%, Sprint 47%, Sony DADC 44%, Motorola 20% and AMD 101%. Other U.S. entities that purchase a 100% share of green power include Pepsi (and subsidiaries), Whole Foods Market, the U.S. EPA, New York University, The World Bank, Dannon, Coldwater Creek, ING, REI, and the University of California Santa Cruz.
