Corporate giants Boeing and Siemens have announced a new agreement between the two companies for a project that will bring smart grid technology to the U.S. Department of Defense.
The goal of the program is to make U.S. military bases more secure in terms of power supply while lowering costs and increasing energy efficiency.
Under the agreement, Boeing will supply system technologies and Siemens will supply microgrid management solutions.
No word on how much the deal is worth, but according to an official press release, the DOD is the biggest energy consuming branch of the federal government, which could mean millions of dollars over the next few years.
Boeing is traditionally seen as manufacturing airplanes and other defense related equipment, but both companies have highlighted broader business of late, especially Siemens, which is heavily involved in wind power production.
A move towards smart grid and smart meter technology for the U.S. military will hopefully aid in the DoD trying to become more energy efficient, which includes incorporating renewable resources like solar power.
