Equipment manufacturer Applied Materials said it’s got approval for giant photovoltaic modules from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
The panels measure 5.7 square metres and are part of its “SunFab” thin film line, aimed at utility companies that want to set up solar “farms”.
The certification from TUV Intercert means the panels meet IEC standards 61646 and 61730.
A full size 5.7 square metre panel has to deliver lots of juice over years of exposure to the sun, to high and low temperatures, to wind and to snow and rain.
Applied designed an integrated rail support to strengthen the PV module and let it withstand wind and seismic loads.
