As it continues on a path to regain some of its once venerable position on the Internet, Yahoo has detailed some of its plans for a completely revamped search results page.
Yahoo and Microsoft have joined forces so that both of them can beef up the back-end of their search engine technology. It’s a way for them to compete against Google, which as we all know now has some of the most complex and genius search algorithms known to mankind.
So that means the pressure is on for the two of them to distinguish themselves from one another. Yahoo and Microsoft will now have the same back-end data when users punch in a search at either site. So the first step is to make the sites look completely different from one another.
Yahoo will reportedly create a brand new look to its search engine in a bid to attract more users to its once-dominating online platform.
In addition to looking different, Yahoo will bring up systematically different information than Bing when users punch in a search.
Paid Content reports, for example, that when users type in the name of a movie, the first results that will pop up show an instant look at the film’s box office record, links to trailers, and buzz about the movie, as well as the ability to add it to their Netflix queue directly from the search page.
When users search for a movie on Bing, the first thing it shows is current showtimes at local theaters. Yahoo’s results will obviously be quite different.
Yahoo Image results will also be different than Bing, giving users the ability to watch slideshows of their results.
Google has seen a bit of a slip in its domineering control over the search market. Bing has picked up considerable ground in a market that is extremely difficult to shift in anyone’s direction. All this competition always leads to good stuff for the end user, as the technology is now improving at a blistering pace.
